2008 Local Government Elections

List of Candidates 

Local Government elections are held on the 2nd Saturday of September every 4th year.  The next elections will be held on Saturday 13 September 2008. 

Yass Valley Council comprises 9 Councillors.  A Mayor and Deputy Mayor are elected annually in September.

Voting is compulsory if you are on the electoral roll.

If you wish to vote as part of the non-resident ratepayer roll, please click here to download an application form.  This form must be forwarded to Council by Monday, 4 August 2008. 

Yass Valley residents can nominate themselves to stand for the election.

If you are interested in standing for election as a Councillor, the NSW Department of Local Government has produced an information booklet called "Becoming a Councillor". 

Key dates for 2008 Local Government Election:

 Opening of non-resident ratepayer roll  Friday 6 June 2008
 Close of rolls  Monday 4 August 2008
 Nominations close  Wednesday 13 August 2008
 Nomination day  Friday 15 August 2008
 Pre-poll Voting (2 weeks before polling day)  Monday 1 September 2008
 Close postal voting applications  Monday 8 September 2008
 Close postal voting (receipt of ballot papers)    Monday 15 September 2008
 Election day  Saturday 13 September 2008

The Process

Local Government elections are conducted in a legal environment in accordance with the provisions of the Local Government Act 1993 and the Local Government (General) Regulation 2005.

The NSW Electoral Commission (NSWEC) is responsible for the conduct of all Local Government elections to ensure that the elections are conducted independently and impartially.

An independent Returning Officer is appointed by the NSWEC to each council area to conduct the election on behalf of and under the direction of the Electoral Commission.

Residents of Yass Valley

All residents of Yass Valley local government area are entitled to vote at local government elections if they are registered on the electoral roll.  Voting is compulsory. Electors enrolled for Federal and State elections are automatically enrolled for their local Council area.
